Splitting Gates – Sounds Afloat

For the first time in the history of the Finnish Museum of Natural History, Luomus (located at Kumpula Botanic Garden), the national geological collection will host a special art exhibition in 2024. This exhibition intervenes in the architectural features of the historical Kumpula manor, the geological specimens and the museum display of the mineral world.

Here, the visitors are encouraged to take their time and savour the marvellous geological displays (of meteorites, minerals, rocks and fossils) and the artistic interventions of Inma Herrera, Shoji Kato, Mari Sunna, Masao Yamamoto and Charlotta Östlund. Together they hold meta-communications.

Sculptures, paintings and photographs – each fascinating artwork has associations with the human psyche and action, and with natural elements (such as organisms, stone, metal, plants and bare bodies). They are placed in specific micro-niches in the museum and suggest that they, too, constitute a part of the world, but their locations and times, or even their contexts, are not meant to be pinned down as the whole installation evokes feelings related to levitation, mutation, motion and abstraction.

The exhibition was conceived and curated by Shoji Kato and realised through conversations with the participating artists, a geologist and the senior curator of Luomus, Arto Luttinen. This exhibition was supported by Niilo Helanderin säätiö and was made with the courtesy of the team of Luomus, Galerie Anhava, Eungyung Kim and Lauri Vainio.

 Som bakgrund till utställningsverken ligger tankar om materians och existensens ständiga förändring. Arbetet med sköra växter gör förändringsprocesserna konkret närvarande, och genom att följa omgivningens växtlighet kan man se hur något byggs upp och bryts ner. Denna förändringsprocess, som vanligtvis sker under några månader, kan i andra fall ta miljoner år, eller vara gömd inuti våra kroppar. 

 Flera av utställningens verk innehåller en mängd frön, en föreningspunkt där både historia och framtid ingår: exempelvis rör sig det rumsliga verket Beam med en liten materialvolym genom en stor del gallerirummet. Det engelska ordet ”beam” representerar såväl något till synes immateriellt (Svenska: stråle) som ett fysiskt stöd, som möjliggör och bär upp en hel konstruktion (svenska: balk). 

 Sediment-serien beaktar konstnärens arbete som ett ekosystem. Genom seriens koncept har det som i arbetsprocessen vanligen fungerar som en mental process – att nya verk bygger på erfarenheter av tidigare verk – fått en konkret, fysisk form: delar av äldre verk finns med i nya verk. 

 Inom musiken handlar begreppet “variation” om att omforma existerande material till en ny enhet, medan det inom biologin kan handla om skillnader mellan individer inom en art. Titeln Variationer kan ses som en hänvisning till något som skiljer sig ut, samtidigt som det förutsätter att det i grunden hör samman. 

 Utställningen består av skulpturala verk samt en stop-motion animation. 

Utställningen har fått stöd från Centret för konstfrämjande/Nylands konstkommission och Konstsamfundet. Konstnärens arbete har fått stöd från Svenska kulturfonden och Centret för konstfrämjande.
